About Ughelli

Ughelli is the seat of one of the 24 kingdoms that make up the Urhobo nation. Its ruler, the Ovie of Ughelli, lives in the palace at Otovwodo, the town's traditional headquarters, and by Ughelli tradition the kingdom was founded by Ughene, a son of the prince Oghwoghwa.

The town is split between Ughelli North and Ughelli South local government areas, and it is an energy town: a major gas-fired power station sits outside it, and oil and gas fields surround it. Government College Ughelli, one of Nigeria's best-known secondary schools, is here too.

For visitors, Ughelli is a place to see Urhobo culture up close, at weddings, festivals and dances, and to eat the food of the region, above all starch and banga soup.
